George "Dr. Funk" Moye represents something essential to the history of American music: a musician whose presence makes everything around him stronger.
He is the foundation beneath the song, the pulse behind the performance, and the musician other musicians can count on.
Moye has anchored the rhythm section for blues royalty Bernard Allison for 16 years, providing an unbreakable foundation across Europe, the UK, and the US. This powerhouse presence is captured on live albums like Live at the Jazzhaus (2010) and Songs From The Road (2020). In the studio with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines, Moye drove tracks for In the Mix (2015), recorded with Todd Fitzgerald, and co-writing credits on "My Kind of Girl." This chemistry fuels Allison's album, Loving You, releasing this October on Ruf Records.
His journey began in Lorain, Ohio, within his family group, The Fabulous Techniques Show Band, and progressed with the Latin group The Nombres, blending funk with Latin grooves. Recording at Suma Recording Studio left an indelible mark on his artistry. However, it was the professional musicianship of his cousin, the late Rev. Willie Lee Mincey of The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, that deeply touched his soul.
Yet, he remains a cornerstone of his local community. His Twin Cities jam sessions with drummer Allen Kirk — which featured regular appearances by the late, great Jellybean Johnson — serve as a rite of passage for the next generation, cultivating rising stars like Dylan Salfer and Matthew Mwangi. Today, George's musical fire burns bright as a family legacy: his daughter, Malina Moye, is a guitar virtuoso honored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and his son, Tyrone "T Why" Moye, is a force within the Mo Thugs Family of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Dr. Funk's monumental impact ensures that the heart of the blues continues to beat with power.
