George "Dr. Funk" Moye represents something essential to the history of American music: the musician whose contribution may not always stand in the spotlight, but whose presence makes everything around him stronger.
He is the foundation beneath the song. The pulse behind the performance. The musician other musicians can count on.
Moye's professionalism ultimately led to his anchoring the rhythm section for blues royalty Bernard Allison, for the past 16 years. Known for heavy, nimble, and masterful lines, Moye has provided the unbreakable foundation for Allison's explosive sound across Europe, the UK, and the United States. This powerhouse presence is immortalized on acclaimed live albums like Live at the Jazzhaus (2010) and Songs From The Road (2020). In the studio, collaborating with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines, Moye laid down the driving tracks for In the Mix (2015), recorded with Tom Fitzgerald, and Let It Go (2018), earning co-writing credits on standout songs like "My Kind of Girl." This formidable chemistry fuels Allison's highly anticipated album, Loving You, releasing this October on Ruf Records.
His musical journey began in Lorain, Ohio, within his family band, The Fabulous Techniques Show Band, and further matriculated with the Latin group The Los Nombres, where he brought funk to meet Latin grooves. A pivotal moment in his career was recording at Suma Recording, which left an indelible mark on his artistry, but it was the professional musicianship of his older cousin, the late Rev. Willie Lee Mincey of the Blind Boys of Mississippi, that deeply touched his soul.
Yet he remains a vital cornerstone of the local community. His legendary Twin Cities jam sessions with drummer Al Kirk — which for years featured regular appearances by the late, great Jellybean Johnson — serve as a crucial rite of passage for the next generation, cultivating rising stars like Dylan Salfer and Matthew Mwangi. Today, George's musical fire burns bright as a family legacy: his daughter, Malina Moye, is a world-renowned guitar virtuoso honored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and his son, Tyrone "T Why" Moye, is a prominent force within the Mo Thugs Family of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Through an international career and a deep commitment to his roots, Dr. Funk's monumental, transformative impact ensures that the heart of the blues continues to beat with devastating power.
